About Detroit Lions

History of the Detroit Lions
Detroit radio executive George Richards and a group of investors purchased the struggling Portsmouth Spartans for $7.95 million in 1934. He renamed them the Lions to pay homage to MLB's Detroit Tigers. In 1963, William Clay Ford, Sr. acquired a controlling interest in the franchise for $4.5 million, and the team has been controlled by descendants of the Ford automotive dynasty ever since.
In the 1950s, quarterback Bobby Layne led the team to three NFL Championship games. The 1950s were arguably the team's greatest decade. In the 1990s, future Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders won four NFL rushing titles, and the team would make the playoffs six times during this decade. Matthew Stafford is the team's all-time passing leader, and Calvin Johnson is the leading pass receiver in team history.
Although the team has not won a Super Bowl, it did win four league championships before 1966. Altogether, the Detroit Lions have appeared in 19 playoff games.
The Detroit Lions Stadium
This NFL team plays at Ford Field, an indoor stadium in downtown Detroit. The stadium was originally intended to be an outdoor facility, and its design incorporates a six-story Hudson's warehouse built in the 1920s. Frosted windows near the ceiling are like those found in historic Detroit-area auto plants. Since 2002, Ford Field has hosted Detroit Lions home football games as well as major concerts, including those by headliners like Beyoncé and One Direction. From 1974 to 2001, the team played in the Pontiac Silverdome. Prior to that, the team played its home games at Tigers Stadium.
