Dance Gavin Dance got its start in 2005, the group self-producing an EP soon after. The rock band released their debut full-length album, Downtown Battle Mountain, in 2007, though shortly after the group began to experience line up changes. They were forced to replace Jonny Craig, their vocalist, with veteran singer Kurt Travis. The first album to feature Travis was the group's self-titled sophomore record, released in 2008. The band recorded prolifically but soon found itself on the rocks. On the verge of disbanding, Dance Gavin Dance invited Craig to rejoin the group for Downtown Battle Mountain II. It was an invigorating but fraught experience. Despite going to rehab, Craig was unable to manage the responsibilities of fronting the band and was replaced by singer Tilian Pearson. Acceptance Speech, released in 2013, was a commercial success, starting the band's new era with a bang.
