About Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners
While the rivalry between the Los Angeles Angels and the Seattle Mariners might not generate as many column inches as some other rivalries in the MLB, there is still no love lost between these two teams. Even though the Angels and the Mariners faced off each other for the first time in their history on April 6, 1977, the animosity began in 1995 because of the famous American League West tie-breaker game. It has just kicked on from there.
The moments that define the rivalry
The AL West Tie-Breaker 1995 - This is the game that really kicked off the Angels-Mariners rivalry in earnest. The MLB season of 1995 was curtailed to 144 games because of a strike. At the end of the season, the Angels and the Mariners had identical 78-66 records, so a tie-breaker was needed to crown the AL West champion. The Mariners trounced the Angels 9-1 at The Kingdome on October 2, 1995, to clinch their first division crown.
The Angels get their revenge - September 23, 2007, pitted the Angels and the Mariners against one another for the AL West Division title at the Angel Stadium. The Angels had their revenge that day as they won 7-4 to clinch their third AL West Division Championship in four seasons and their sixth overall.
How the Angels match up against the Mariners
Since their first game on April 6, 1977, the Angels have played the Mariners on more than six hundred occasions. This is how they measure up against the team from Seattle:
| Games Played | Wins | Losses | Win %age | Home Wins-Losses | Away Wins-Losses |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 616 | 338 | 278 | .549 | 174-132 | 164-146 |
The Angels have had the upper hand over the years but the lead is not too big. The Angels have smashed 2,870 runs in these six hundred and sixteen games whereas the Mariners have responded with 2,665 of their own. Both teams however, haven’t squared-off in the postseason yet which is quite surprising.
The Angels-Mariners Legends
Garret Anderson was right at the heart of the Angels revolution that culminated in the 2002 World Series win. It was however icons like Nolan Ryan, Bobby Grich, Jim Fregosi and Tim Salmon who laid the foundation for the Angels to be a successful ball club.Edgar Martinez, Ichiro Suzuki and of course Ken Griffey Jr. helped the Mariners record their three division title triumphs. Martinez was part of the Mariners’ all three division championship winning teams. Suzuki won the AL West Division with the Mariners in 2001 while Ken Griffey Jr. won two in 1995 and 1997.
