Hartford Whalers
The franchise joined the NHL in 1979 as the NHL-WHA merger as the Hartford Whalers, and were eventually relocated to North Carolina in 1997. The original Carolina Hurricanes were founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers- and they were originally based out of Boston before they moved to Hartford, CT. When the NHL-WHA merger happened in 1979, the Whalers were among only four teams that were admitted to the NHL based on impressive attendance and play. Now playing within the NHL the team became known as the Hartford Whalers, and they struggled to gain their footing within the league. For much of their time in Hartford the team was plagued with not being as marketable as other teams due to the small venue and city in which they played. After struggling for countless years, the owner of the team announced that they would be relocating for the 1996-1997 season to Raleigh, North Carolina and would become known as the Carolina Hurricanes.
Becoming the Carolina Hurricanes
Initially the team had to play their home games in Greensboro due to their arena not being completed yet. With their temporary location not within proximity to their permanent home the Hurricanes had a difficult time bringing in a crowd to their games. They were often mocked around the league due to their venue being the largest in the league, but they were still the lowest in average attendance per game. On ice performance also was not impressive for the young team, they qualified for their first playoff appearance in 1999 but were edged out by the Boston Bruins. The Hurricanes made it to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 2002 when they came out on top of their division. They faced off against the Detroit Red Wings in the finals-but ultimately lost after a toughly fought battle. After almost winning the cup in 2002, the Hurricanes were never able to pick back up where they left off. With a losing record in the next two seasons they were able to score top draft pick Eric Staal in 2003, who helped transform the team to what it is today.
First Stanley Cup Victory
In the 2005-2006 season the Carolina Hurricanes came out again as the Southeast Division Champions and were heavily favored entering the playoffs. The team won their first Stanley Cup during the 2005-2006 season, beating the Edmonton Oilers four games to three, as well as three division championships and two conference championships. With the Hurricanes winning the cup, the state of North Carolina had their first professional championship title. Coming off their championship run, the Hurricanes lost several of their key players to free agency and injury. Proving to be detrimental to the team, the Hurricanes failed to qualify for the playoffs the year following their Cup victory. For the next several years the Hurricanes would appear in several post season runs but were unable to capitalize on any of them. In 2018 the Hurricanes front office and coaching staff saw a lot of realignment, and in 2019 the Hurricanes clinched a playoff spot for the first time in a decade. In the 2019 playoffs the Hurricanes surprised many- defeating the reigning champions the Washington Capitals as well as the New York Islanders before they were eliminated by the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Finals. With fans seeing a glimmer of hope coming out of the previous season they are eager to see what the Carolina Hurricanes can do this upcoming season!
Must See Matchups
While the Carolina Hurricanes do not have one specific rivalry that is deeply rooted enough, they have several teams that prove to get under the skin of Hurricanes players. Playing within the Metropolitan Division, it is only natural that most of the teams that the Hurricanes go head to head with include the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, the Washington Capitals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the New Jersey Devils. Seeing the Hurricanes play against any of these teams is sure to be a memory that you are never going to forget.
Be a part of all the excitement that is a Carolina Hurricanes hockey game! From witnessing the “Storm Surges” post victory to screaming the battle cry as the players step on the ice, a Hurricanes game is fun for everyone involved. Order your cheap Carolina Hurricanes tickets today before they are gone!
