History of the Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers were founded in 1971 as a part of the World Hockey Association, although they did not play their first season until 1972. For their first season of play within the WHA they were known as the Alberta Oilers, only to have their name changed to Edmonton Oilers a year later. With the 1979 merger of the WHA and the NHL the Edmonton Oilers were one of four teams that became part of the National Hockey League. Upon entering the NHL, the Oilers saw great success as the team made the playoffs every year from 1979 through 1992. The team has won five Stanley Cups within a six-season time frame; 1984-1988 and 1990. Because of their achievements, the Oilers team from these championship years were given dynasty status by the Hockey Hall of Fame. Since their last Stanley Cup Championship, the Oilers have only made the post season 10 times.
As soon as the team entered the NHL they acquired players who would later become hockey legends. This list includes players such as Mark Messier, and Wayne Gretzky, both of which became essential in the team winning their five Stanley Cups. More recently the Oilers have drafted players such as Taylor Hall in 2010 and Connor McDavid in 2015. Hall played with the team up until 2016 when he was traded to the New Jersey Devils. McDavid only 19 years old at the time quickly rose in the ranks and became the captain for the team. In only his second year he brought the team to their first playoff appearance in eleven years.
The Edmonton Oilers Arena
The Oilers currently play their home games at Rogers Place, an arena that was built in 2014 for the team. The first game that the oilers played there was on October 12, 2016 against longtime rival the Calgary Flames. Before the team moved to Rogers Place they played at the Northlands Coliseum. The arena is known mainly for hosting hockey games as well as concerts.
Rivalries
The main rival the Oilers have is with the Calgary Flames, as they are the only other professional hockey team located in the Canadian Province of Alberta. Two other historical rivals include the Los Angeles Kings as well as the Winnipeg Jets, mainly because of their historical meetings in the post season playoffs.
