Franchise History
Founded recently in 1992, the Tampa Bay Lightning hosts their home games at Amalie Arena in Tampa. Early on in their inaugural season, the Lightning surprised many around the league with their immaculate performance. Their high came crashing down however on one of the longest road trips in NHL history, with their closest division rival being over 1,000 miles away. They qualified for their first playoff appearance in the 1995-1996 season, playing the Philadelphia Flyers in their first ever Stanley Cup Playoff Series. Even after making it to the playoffs for the first time, the Lightning were struggling on and off the ice. Financial struggles threatened the team, almost causing them to close the doors on the operations. In 2001 the Lightning hired John Tortorella as the head coach and they also acquired Martin St. Louis. For the next two seasons the Lightning had outstanding seasons leading them up to their 2004 Stanley Cup run against the Calgary Flames. Despite a rollercoaster ride of a career, the Tampa Bay Lightnings won their first Stanley Cup in 2004 but would have to wait another eleven years to make it to the playoffs again. During this eleven-year drought of the playoffs the Lightning went through a rebuilding period where they not only lost Martin St. Louis, but they also acquired Ben Bishop, Steven Stamkos, and Ryan Callahan. In 2013-2014 the Lightning qualified for the playoffs, and again in 2014-2015. During the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs the Lightning eliminated the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers before they were eliminated in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Chicago Blackhawks. In the seasons since their defeat in the finals, the Tampa Bay Lightning have been one of the most impactful teams in the league-often crushing records along the way.
Tampa Bay Lightning Today
Currently, the team is coached by coach Jon Cooper, who has led the team since 2013. Today they are undoubtedly one of the top teams in the National Hockey League, despite having only won a single Stanley Cup. With the team having come so close to clinching the cup several times in the past five years, it is only a matter of time before they bring the Stanley Cup back to the city of Tampa. Be sure to catch amazing players this season such as Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, Tyler Johnson and Andrei Vasilevskiy make history on the ice!
Tampa Bay Lightning vs Detroit Red Wings
The rivalry between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Detroit Red Wings only came to the forefront recently, when the two faced off against each other in back to back playoff appearances. The Lightning have always come out on top against the Red Wings, only intensifying the rivalry. More recently the rivalry has reached an all time high with the new Lightning general manager being a career-long Red Wing. Any game between the two is one that you do not want to miss!
Tampa Bay Lightning vs Florida Panthers
Being located so close to each other and the only two NHL teams in Florida, it is only natural that there is a rivalry between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. The two have been playing each other in the same division since 1993, and they have never played each other in the playoffs. At the end of the season whichever team finishes with the higher point count is awarded the “Governor’s Cup”. Every time the Lightning play the Panthers it is going to be an exciting game, as the players work to hold their title for the best team in Florida.
Coming up short within the playoffs the past few seasons, this young team is hungry for the cup. They are expected to have a great season, so make sure you get cheap Lightning tickets to the best seats in the house while they are still available!
2020 Stanley Cup Champions
The 2020 NHL playoffs had a delayed start due to unforeseen circumstances, but there was still a winner crowned with the rare schedule. The Tampa Bay Lightning took home their second Stanley Cup trophy after beating the Dallas Stars four games to two. See the Lightning's schedule to find out when and where their next game is! Don’t miss your chance to see the 2020 Stanley Cup champion, Tampa Bay Lightning, hit the ice live.
