How it Works

From April to June you can catch your team battle down the bracket to hopefully be the team hoisting the cup in the air. Over the years the NHL playoff format has changed several times. The 2014 season restructured the tournament, so it's based on divisions as opposed to conferences. Sixteen teams - eight from the East and eight from the West - face-off in a bracket for the finals. From there they fight for the Division finals, the Conference finals and then the coveted Stanley Cup Final. Each series throughout the playoffs is played as a best-of-seven format.

Memorable Moments

It seems unfair to pin down a couple of famous moments in NHL playoff history, but there are a couple of plays that stand out regardless of what team you root for. For example, Bobby Orr's iconic overtime goal in 1970 - you know the one. Orr scored on the St. Louis Blues to help the Bruins win their first Stanley Cup in almost 30 years. To celebrate, Orr jumped in the air, a moment that was caught perfectly on camera, and later made into a statue that greets fans outside Boston's TD Garden. The longest game in the history of the Stanley Cup should also get a special nod, as the Oilers and Bruins fought it out in Game 1 of the 1990 finals for 115 minutes and 13 seconds until almost one thirty in the morning. Now that takes some serious strength. That passion is shared by teams as they advance shot after shot. With the tournament lasting a couple of months, every game, and every round means more to the players. They've come this far, and they won't be beat.
