Blazing a New Bluegrass Trail

Bela Fleck was already playing bluegrass with New Grass Revival when he received the opportunity to perform on the PBS show Lonesome Pines Special. He recruited several other musicians to join him, and soon he departed New Grass Revival and christened his new group Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. The band began to generate interest almost immediately with their bluegrass and jazz fusion. Their 1989 debut album garnered a Grammy nomination, and their sophomore record, Flight of the Cosmic Hippo, earned two Grammy nominations. They continued to record while they toured, gaining a name for themselves for their electric, dynamic shows. In 1996 the band released Live Art, an impressive live album that featured concerts from a five year period, finally a Grammy for the song "Sinister Minister." After more than two decades of touring and recording, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones retreated on hiatus. For several years the band remained quiet, until a tentative return in 2016 with a short tour and a performance at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
