A Determined Drive

The Belmont basketball program kicked off in the 1950s, making a splash with an appearance in the 1955 NAIA playoff. The 1980s were golden years for the team. Belmont made multiple forays in the NAIA playoffs, advancing far into the tournament. Rick Byrd took over leadership of the team in 1986, setting into motion what would be a steady but determined climb up through the ranks of college basketball. In recent years, the Belmont Bruins have really turned on the heat on the basketball court. They made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006, rapidly becoming a repeat contender. Since then they've been a constant threat in their conference, winning both regular season championships and conference tournament championships. In 2012 they joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, and the following season they made it all the way to the NIT Quarterfinals, the team's best performance in the tournament to date.
