A Conference Juggernaut

Brigham Young University founded their women's basketball program in 1972, starting off with a winning season. Throughout those early years, the Cougars made steady gains. They maintained an impressive five-year streak as the Intermountain Athletic Conference regular season champions from 1978 to 1982. In 1984 they were inaugurated into the NCAA Tournament, though they were not able to move past the first round. The 1990s were mostly quiet years for BYU, except for 1993, when the team secured both the regular season and tournament championships in the Western Athletic Conference. It wasn't until 2000 that the Cougars again appeared in the NCAA Tournament, but two years after that they pushed through to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time. Since then, they have been a consistent threat in the post-season and a leader in their conference.
