Hopeful persistence through pain

Danny Gokey is not a man deterred by disappointment. As a high school student, he failed to make the cut for the school's premier singing group, but he persisted in music by playing trumpet and singing in his church's choir. In 2008 he auditioned for and won a spot on American Idol. It was a time for turning tragedy into triumph, as his supportive wife had died shortly before the competition took place. He continued to advance on the show, a favorite with renditions of songs like "Stand By Me" and "What Hurts the Most," ultimately ending the show in third place. After finishing the American Idol tour, he released My Best Days in 2010. It was a smash hit on the country charts, and Gokey went on tour with Sugarland and Taylor Swift. After that, he moved from country music towards contemporary Christian music, releasing Hope in Front of Me in 2014. Two years later he won the GMA Dove Award for Christmas Album of the Year for Christmas is Here. In 2017 he released Rise, which climbed all the way to No. 1 on the Christian Albums chart.
