Creating soccer history
After playing its first game in 1996, D.C. United quickly established itself as a dominant force in the new MLS. In its first season, the team won both the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup. The following year it trounced the Colorado Rapids to defend the MLS Cup. In 1998 D.C. United competed in CONCACAF and snagged both the Champions Cup and the Interamerican Cup. The team had massive appeal for players, and in 2004 D.C. United debuted teenage soccer prodigy Freddy Adu, who was the youngest player to score a goal in the MLS at the time. In 2006 and 2007, the United earned the MLS Supporters' Shield, the first team to do so in consecutive years. In 2013 the United turned around a disappointing season to defeat Real Salt Lake and win the U.S. Open Cup. In 2018 the team opened the brand new Audi Field, with fans eagerly waiting to pour into the stadium for each game.
