Breaking the comedic rulebook

Even while Demetri Martin was studiously applying himself at Yale University towards a History B.A., his comedic talents were shining through. He started law school, but he soon decided to launch his comedy career instead. He began working the stand up scene in 1997, though it was four years before he received much recognition. He caused a sensation at the 2003 Edinburgh Festival Fringe with his show If I... He began writing for Late Night with Conan O'Brien and filmed his first Comedy Central special in 2004. He became famous for his deadpan expressions and using drawings and graphs in his stand-up. The following year he joined The Daily Show as a correspondent. In 2009 he launched his own show, Important Things with Demetri Martin, on Comedy Central. That year he also delved into film more seriously, starring in Ang Lee's film Taking Woodstock. In 2015 he debuted on Netflix with Live (At the Time).
