The Nickname That Became Legendary
Curious how DJ Snake got his name? Well, in his youth he created graffiti art and continuously evaded the police, earning him the nickname ‘Snake.’ He began DJ-ing at the age of 14 and began producing music at 19. Everyone in his city began calling him ‘Snake’ so he began calling himself DJ Snake.
Rise to the Top
In 2011 DJ Snake produced for Lady Gaga’s album Born This Way, earning him a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Snake was also the co-producer for Gaga’s song “Government Hooker” which was named best song on her album by fans.
He became known from his singles “Bird Machine” and “Turn Down For What” which were released in 2013. The song “Bird Machine” collaborated with French musician Alesia and was picked up by a Los Angeles recording label that Diplo runs. That same year DJ Snake was asked to do a live mix on Diplo’s radio show. Following this, DJ Snake was said to be collaborating with Diplo on a piece which in 2015 was released, their single “Lean On” collaborated with MO and Major Lazer.
In 2014 DJ Snake was titled an “Artist to Watch” by FoxWeekly and that same year he and Dillion Francis were announced to be the alternating supporting artists on tour with Skrillex. Snake performed at Coachella in 2015, where two songs he was a part of (“Lean On” and “You Know You Like It”) were in the top 10 Shazamed songs from the festival. In 2016 he was named by Forbes as one of their “30 Under 30 In Music.”
His song “Turn Down For What” was nominated for MTV Video Music Awards for Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects, and the MTV Clubland Award. In 2016 Snake collaborated with Justin Bieber for the single “Let Me Love You.” He has also collaborated with Selena Gomez, Cardi B, and Ozuna to produce the vocals for “Taki Taki” and Sheck Wes, Offset, 21 Savage, and Gucci Mane to produce the single “Enzo.”
