Growing up in Morocco, Karim Kharbouch was devoted to two passions, soccer and rap. When he was a teenager his family moved to New York City, where he picked up English at school and in daily life. Life for his family became strained when his father moved back to Morocco and his mother decided to stay, relying on Karim to support the family. He started getting involved in battle rap under the moniker Young French, and he and his friend produced a series of street DVDs about the players in the local hip hop scene. In 2007 he released his debut mixtape as French Montana. By 2012 he had started to gain traction, snagging a feature as part of XXL's Freshman Class of 2012. His singles "Choppa Choppa Down" with Waka Flocka Flame, "Shot Caller," and "Pop That" delivered breakthrough success. Other music stars flocked to the studio to work with French Montana, including Prodigy, Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Jennifer Lopez, and The Weeknd.
