Preserving the music through generations
The Gipsy Kings started out as a family affair. Famous rumba flamenca singer Jose Reyes taught his sons, Nicolas and Andre, the ways of flamenco in their band, Los Reyes. In the mid 1970s, Nicolas and Andre recruited their cousins to join them. Though they were born in France, their Catalonian parents had imparted a love of traditional flamenco music to them. As the band traveled to perform, they adopted the name Gipsy Kings to honor both their heritage and their lifestyle. The Gipsy Kings released their first album in 1982, but it wasn't until five years later that they started to gain worldwide recognition. Now, they are honored as one of the leading flamenco bands, a group that has spread their signature style of rumba flamenca, infused with pop, funk, and salsa around the world. They've been nominated for several Grammy Awards, winning the award for Best World Music Album in 2013 for Savor Flamenco.
