Young athletes prove their mettle
The tournament officially got its start in 1977, with the USSR dominating the competition for the first four years. However, throughout the decades, Canada has emerged as the tournament leader, with nearly 20 gold medals to its name. In fact, the World Juniors has achieved special status in Canada, where hockey fans scramble to get cheap tickets before they all sell out. Perhaps the passion from both Canada and the USSR is what inspired the "Punch-up in Piestany" in 1987, an epic brawl between both teams that was incited when Pavel Kostichkin aimed a two-handed slash at Theoren Fleury. The fight lasted twenty minutes, despite the referees' best attempts to break it up. Both teams were thrown out of the tournament, which especially hurt the Canadians, as they still had a shot at the gold. Instead, Finland snagged the title that year. Still, no matter the year, the World Juniors is a thrilling time for hockey fans, who get to see the young talent rising up in the NHL and around the world.
With Canada being both the defending champions from the 2018 World Juniors and the host of the 2019 World Juniors, tensions are especially high. The atmosphere in the arena will be unbeatable, so act fast to snag your cheap IIHF World Junior Championship tickets!
