About Indy Eleven
The Indy Eleven is an American professional soccer team. The team is based in Indianapolis, Indiana and plays their home games at Lucas Oil Stadium. The team was founded in 2013. They debuted in the North American Soccer League in 2014 but moved to the United Soccer League in 2018. The team is owned by Ersal Ozdemir, CEO of Keystone Group LLC. Ozdemir named Peter Wilt as the team's first President and General Manager. Juergen Sommer was named the first Head Coach and Director of Operations in 2013. He was a former Indiana University standout, as well as a US International and English Premier League and Major League Soccer veteran.
History
The team’s name and club colors were officially revealed to the public on April 25, 2013. The Indy Eleven was named for the 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which is an infantry regiment that served with notoriety in the Union Army during the Civil War. The name pays homage to the state’s history, and the number eleven reflects the number of players on the field. Additionally, the number eleven also references the state’s Indianapolis 500, which began in 1911. While the team did not play its first game until 2014, more than 7,000 season tickets were sold in 2013—before the team had even played one game. The Indy Eleven was the first team in NASL history to have a waitlist for their season tickets. The team’s first game ended in a draw, 1-1 against, the Carolina Railhawks. In 2015, the team fired Juergen Sommer and Tim Regan took over as the interim manager. Later that year, Tim Hankinson was hired to be the team’s manager, but he left the team and did not return for the 2018 season. In 2016, the Indy Eleven won the 2016 Spring Championship. They had an undefeated season that year. In 2017, the team announced that they would try to join Major League Soccer, but they were passed over by MLS. In 2018, the team joined the United Soccer League and hired a new head coach, Martin Rennie. The team’s colors are red, white, and blue, and their crest features a navy colored checkered background as a nod to the city’s auto-racing culture and the team’s supporters, called the Brickyard Battalion.
