A modern explorer of music

Growing up in Detroit, John Gillis learned to play music by picking up his siblings' instruments. He consumed music voraciously, his tastes ranging from classical to punk. He married Meg White, taking her name, and worked on the local circuit as a drummer. When Meg showed an interest in playing drums with him, the two founded The White Stripes. They soon became an underground darling, hitting mainstream success with 2001's White Blood Cells and 2013's Elephant. The lead single from White Blood Cells, "Seven Army Nation," snagged the duo a Grammy. By this time Meg and Jack White had divorced, and in 2011 The White Stripes disbanded. Jack White has had a varied career beyond The White Stripes, including touring with The Raconteurs to open for Bob Dylan and working with Alicia Keys on "Another Way to Die" for the Bond film Quantum of Solace. His debut solo album, Blunderbuss, came out in 2012, and soon he was raking in Grammy Award nominations for his solo work.
