Resisting any labels

Encouraged by her music-loving parents, Kelis Rogers delved into performance at a young age. Her childhood in New York City was full of church choir practices and music lessons. After being introduced to Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, Kelis got her foot in the door of the industry with a record deal at Virgin Records. She released Kaleidoscope in 1999, snagging both a BRIT Award and an NME Award. She slingshot to international success with the release of "Milkshake," which both made her a radio mainstay and earned her a Grammy nomination. Despite collaborating with other superstar artists, from Busta Rhymes to Björk, a lack of support from her label for Kelis Was Here drove her to take a break from the industry. During her hiatus she enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu culinary school, her new found passion eventually spinning off into a cookbook, a TV show, and a line of sauces. When she returned in 2010 with Flesh Tone, she showed a new dance music side of herself. Kelis continued to evolve with 2014's Food, where she infused soul, funk, and gospel into her signature sound, creating retro-feeling R&B vibes.
