From Film to the Stage

Kinky Boots originally started as a film back in 2005, and it tells the story of businessman Charlie Price. After he inherits a shoe factory from his dad, Price teams up with Lola, a cabaret and drag queen performer, and the two create a unique brand of high-heeled boots to sell. In 2012 producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig both saw the film and instantly fell in love. Later that year they obtained the rights to the show and teamed up to create the play. In October of that year the show premiered at the Bank of America Theater in Chicago. In April of 2013 the show began their performances on Broadway.

Though it initially received negative reviews from critics, Kinky Boots tickets eventually became a hot commodity. The show had quite a successful run, earning several awards. After running on Broadway, the show earned 13 nominations and ended up winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The hit Broadway play celebrated its 1000th performance in August of 2015.

World-renowned musician Cyndi Lauper collaborated with the writers and producers of the Kinky Boots show to create its lyrics and music. Although this was her first try at writing for a Broadway show, she earned a Tony for Best Musical Score.
