Growing up in Chicago , Kurt Elling was immersed in one of the richest musical cultures in the country. Inspired by his father, Elling began pursuing music himself. Soon he was singing in choirs and playing multiple instruments. While studying for his master's, he began performing at jazz clubs. The two passions pulled him in different directions, and eventually he left school to pursue music completely. He honed his scat style and writing skills, and in 1995 he released Close Your Eyes with Blue Note. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award, but it was his 2009 album Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman that finally won him a Grammy – as well as accolades for being one of the best vocal jazz albums ever. For twenty years he performed with Laurence Hobgood, a modern piano virtuous, and he has collaborated with many other artists.
