Staking Out Conference Territory

The LSU Tigers basketball program got its start in the early twentieth century, quietly but steadily climbing up the ranks of college basketball. The 1950s were years of strength for the team, with two SEC championships and passionate drives into the NCAA Basketball Championship. In 1970 LSU star "Pistol" Pete Maravich was dubbed National Player of the Year, averaging 44.2 points a game. Under Coach Dale Brown, the Tigers saw new heights of success. The Tigers were a constant threat in the NCAA Tournament and won the SEC Tournament championship in 1980. In the decades since, LSU has continued to make strong forays into the NCAA Tournament, including the Tigers spectacular appearance in the 2006 Final Four, where none of the teams were #1 seeds. The Tigers unfortunately fell to the UCLA Bruins, but the season was still a remarkable success. In 2009 Coach Trent Johnson was dubbed the SEC Coach of the Year in celebration of his admirable debut year at LSU. Now under the leadership of Will Wade, the Tigers are ready to continue their drive forward.
