Born in New York City, Gerald Maxwell Rivera grew up deeply immersed in music. At a young age he was involved in a church choir, and by the time he was a teenager he was writing songs. Maxwell was inspired by 1980s R&B, trailblazing the 'neo soul' sound that became popular in the 1990s. He hustled hard on the New York scene and eventually attracted the attention of a label. His debut album was released in 1996, snowballing in popularity. Time, Rolling Stone, and USA Today all heralded Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite as one of the best records of the year, and it was nominated for Best R&B Album at the Grammy Awards. While his albums continued to bring in more fans and his singles climbed the charts, Maxwell decided to take a hiatus in 2001. Eight years later he debuted BLACKsummers'night, the first in a trilogy of records, to critical acclaim and popular success.
