Founded in 1893, the University of Mississippi football program is the oldest in the state. The Rebels joined the Southeastern Conference in 1933, quickly becoming a threat. The mid-twentieth century was a golden era for Ole Miss, with the Rebels snagging six SEC titles under Coach Johnny Vaught. The 1959 team was even dubbed the "SEC Team of the Decade," and the Rebels were frequent contenders in post-season bowl games. Throughout the second half of the century, the team had its ups and downs. In the early 2000s, the Rebels started to gain more traction. After Hugh Freeze took the helm in 2011, the team posted impressive winning seasons and won a slot at the 2014 Peach Bowl, their most significant bowl game since 1969. However Freeze had to resign amidst controversy, and Matt Luke stepped in as interim coach. Still, that hasn't done much to slow the Rebels, who are determined to keep pushing forward on the gains they have made in recent years. Never is the passion felt more than at Ole Miss-MSU games. The Egg Bowl has become legendary between the two schools, having been played over 100 times.
