Challenging All Expectations

Mississippi State's program started in the early 1900s with a display of strength, racking up several conference regular season championships in those early years. The Bulldogs' first appearance in the NCAA Tournament was in 1963, defying the state in order to compete. The state refused to sanction the team's involvement in an integrated event, so the Bulldogs left for the tournament in the middle of the night. They ended up losing to Loyola, whose team went on to be the National Champions. The Bulldogs didn't return to the NCAA Tournament until 1991 under the leadership of Coach Richard Williams. It was the first sign that Mississippi State's fortunes were turning around, and in 1996 the team advanced all the way to the NCAA Final Four. In the 2000s they have come into their own as a conference threat, winning the conference tournament championship in 2002 and 2009.
