The pioneer of indie rock
Growing up in England, Steven Patrick Morrissey found solace in music, developing a fascination with glam rock. He eventually joined the punk rock scene in Manchester, but it was his work with Johnny Marr and The Smiths that launched Morrissey to international superstar status. The band became a sensation in both the UK and the USA, and Morrissey became an enigmatic music idol, one the eschewed the traditional hard core rocker style for a more subdued, androgynous appearance. His lyrics were heartrendingly intimate – and often political, stirring up controversy. After The Smiths broke up, Morrissey launched a solo career with the release of Viva Hate in 1987. Singles like "Suedehead," "Irish Blood, English Heart," and "You Have Killed Me" cemented Morrissey's status as one of the most influential indie musicians of all time.
