Art with a purpose
Coming out of Los Angeles, MUNA has an inspired origin story, a meeting of musical minds at the right place and the right time. Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson were jamming on guitars at a party when Katie Gavin joined in singing. The three students clicked instantly and began collaborating together, resulting in a dark electro-pop sound. In 2014 they unleashed their debut EP, More Perfect, online, generating substantial buzz. Shortly after they were signed by RCA Records, who released their first major EP in 2016. About U, a full-length record, followed a year later. MUNA's music intentionally leaves out gender-based pronouns, as the band is committed to creating a supportive musical community where fans are free to express their identities. With each artist identifying as queer, many of MUNA's songs are about sexuality and gender, including popular singles like "So Special." MUNA's heartfelt authenticity and fresh sound make them sensational live acts, and they've performed at Lollapalooza and toured with Grouplove and Harry Styles.
