2023 NBA Playoffs Preview
Eastern Conference Play-In TournamentNo. 8-seed Atlanta Hawks at No. 7-seed Miami Heat
The Heat and Hawks are two quiet teams in the Eastern Conference that have the potential to upset a few teams and sneak by in the playoffs. They don't necessarily have the star-power like in Philadelphia, Boston, or Milwaukee; however, they pose difficult matchups for many of the teams in the Eastern Conference.
No. 10-seed Chicago Bulls at No. 9-seed Toronto Raptors
Both teams were thought to be out of playoff contention; however, they were able to sneak out enough wins towards the end of the regular season to make the Play-In. Chicago's season was disappointing after losing superstar point guard Lonzo Ball to a knee injury, and Toronto faced difficulties of their own. Toronto is lead by Fred van Fleet and Pascal Siakam and should be able to beat the Bulls and advance.
Eastern Conference Playoffs Round 1No. 1-seed Milwaukee Bucks vs. No. 8-seed (winner of 9/10 and loser of 7/8 play to determine the 8-seed)
The Bucks are primed for the playoffs. They own the best record in the NBA and passed the Celtics in Eastern Conference regular season bragging rights. An offense lead by the trio of MVP-candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday, and Khris Middleton will look to make quick work of whoever claims the 8-seed (winner of 9/10 and loser of 7/8 play to determine the 8 seed)
No. 2-seed Boston Celtics vs. No. 7-seed (winner of 7/8)
The Boston Celtics was everyone's favorite to win the Championship at the start of the season and majority of the regular season. They've now taken a back seat to the Bucks; however, they remain just as dangerous and have a roster loaded with talent. The duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are one of the best offensive combos in the league. Either Atlanta or Miami will have their hands full.
No. 3-seed Philadelphia 76ers vs No. 6-seed Brooklyn Nets
MVP frontrunner Joel Embiid has carried this Sixers team to the third seed in the Eastern Conference. His co-star, James Harden has also put together an excellent season, but has a notorious history of poor playoff performances. Philly has a ton of offensive talent, but they struggled defensively down the stretch of the regular season. Brooklyn on the other hand is a team with an entirely new identity. After trading both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant mid-season, the Nets looked as though they were hitting the reboot button, but they managed to finish strong, led by Mikal Bridges, Spencer Dinwiddie and young rising star Nic Claxton. It's an accomplishment the Nets finished where they did; however, a first round exit will most likely be in the cards for Brooklyn.
No. 4-seed Cleveland Cavaliers vs No. 5-seed New York Knicks
After a disappointing 11th place finish last season, playoff basketball is officially back in the Big Apple. The Knicks had an impressive season with a roster bolstered by the newly acquired Jalen Brunson. The Knicks will be without Julius Randle who suffered a sprained ankle late in the regular season; however, their offense has been electric with big contributions coming from Immanuel Quickley, Quentin Grimes, and Josh Hart. Standing in New York's way is Donovan Mitchell and the Cavs. A supporting case of Evan Mobley, Jarret Allen, and Darius Garland may prove to be too much for the Knicks. Cleveland has a young exciting core, but does lack depth off the bench. This should be an exciting series.
Western Conference Play-In TournamentNo. 10-seed Oklahoma City Thunder vs. No. 9-seed New Orleans Pelicans
The OKC Thunder have defied expectations and snuck into the Play-In. After a second-half surge, the Thunder find themselves in unfamilar territory. Led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, this young Thunder team will look to beat an injury-plagued Pelicans team that will be without phenom Zion Williamson. Although the Pelicans have a very talented team, the necessity of winning two straight to advance might be too much for them.
No. 8-seed Minnesota Timberwolves vs No. 7-seed Los Angeles Lakers
The road to the playoffs has not been easy for King James and the Lakers. Injuries, poor play, and a competitive conference had the Lakers on the outside looking in; however, a second half resurgence and a healthy LeBron have the Lakers soaring into the Play-In. The TWolves on the other hand have been on a bit of a rollercoaster all season. Their offseason acquisition Rudy Gobert has been a disappointment and recently had an in-game altercation with teammate Kyle Anderson. . They still have Anthony Edwards who pieced together an excellent season, as well as veteran big man Karl Anthony-Towns. Finding consistency will be the key for the Timberwolves as they look to play spoiler.
Western Conference Playoffs Round 1No. 1-seed Denver Nuggets vs No. 8-seed (winner of 9/10 and loser of 7/8 play to determine the 8 seed)
The Nuggets were sitting pretty atop the Western Conference for much of the regular season, but the gap is quickly closing. Their last few playoff runs have ended in disappointment so look for incumbent MVP Nikola Jokic to avenge those losses. Experts have them pegged to make it out of the Western Conference Finals and play in the Championship so whoever they're matched up against wont have an easy time.
No. 2-seed Memphis Grizzlies vs. No. 7-seed (winner of 7/8)
The Grizzlies didn't miss a beat when All-star guard Ja Morant was serving his suspension. Morant has been the main offensive force in this Memphis lineup and will need to perform at an even higher level if Memphis wants to achieve playoff success. Defensive Player of the Year candidate Jaren Jackson Jr. has been the team's anchor and will continue to make a name for himself and hold down the paint and perimeter. Whether it's the Timberwolves or Lakers, the Grizzlies will be looking to prove why they're one of the best in the West.
No 3-seed Sacramento Kings vs. No. 6-seed Golden State Warriors
Arguably one of the biggest surprises this NBA season has been the Sacramento Kings. Not only do they own one of the best offensive ratings for the regular season, but all-time. De'Aaron Fox has finally silenced critics and put together a season of memorable moments and come up big in the clutch. His explosiveness and ability to score has secured his name as one of the league's best guards. Playing alongside him is Domantas Sabonis who has become a double-double machine and elite playmaker. The Warriors find themselves in unfamiliar territory. They've struggled on the road this season and only won 11 on the road this year. Injuries haunted the Warriors this season; however, the sharpshooting duo of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson are back and looking to prove why they're the defending NBA Champs.
No. 4-seed Phoenix Suns vs. No. 5-seed Los Angeles Clippers
Once Phoenix acquired Kevin Durant at the trade deadline, everyone penciled them in as favorites to win the Championship. Multiple injuries limited Durant's play; however a player of his caliber will still make them instant contenders in the West. With co-stars Chris Paul and Devin Booker playing at a high level, the Suns will be a mighty challenge for the Clippers, who are looking to overcome regular-season misfortunes. Injuries plagued the Clippers, but they're still looking to make a playoff run with a roster filled with talent. A knee injury to Paul George will be a factor, but the Clippers have one of the best benches in the league.NBA Playoffs Team Schedule
