The Original Ottawa Senators
After the eventual failure of the original Ottawa Senators in 1934, the team reinvented itself in 1990 as another franchise in the NHL and began playing in the 1992-1993 season. The original Ottawa Senators team was wildly successful within the league, bringing to the city of Ottawa eleven Stanley Cups. Due to financial struggles, the original team was relocated to St. Louis, but eventually was dismantled by the league. In 1990 it was announced that the league would begin an expansion effort and immediately the city of Ottawa put in a bid to bring back an NHL team. In their first season the Senators plummeted to the bottom of the standings which although seems like a bad thing, many encouraged the poor performance of the team knowing it would secure them high draft picks. Throughout their period of turmoil, the Senators acquired young players who would go on to become stars in the league, including Alexei Yashin, Bryan Berard, Chris Phillips, and Marian Hossa.
Ottawa Senators Reinvented
In 1996 the Senators hired Jacques Martin as the head coach, and quickly the Senators rose in the standings. During the four years that Martin coached the young team, they qualified for the playoffs every season. Despite making it to the playoffs for four consecutive seasons, the Ottawa Senators were never able to cash in on the playoffs bringing home a Stanley Cup. Eventually by the 2002-2003 season the Senators finished with the best record in the league, bringing home their first President’s Trophy. They even came close that season to making their first finals appearance, but they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals. After qualifying for the playoffs for nine consecutive seasons in a row, the Senators made their first appearance in the Finals during the 2006-2007 season. Being the first time that the modern-day Senators made the playoffs since 1927 when the old Senators were in town, the city of Ottawa turned out big for their team. Hosting parades, mounting signs, and decorating the city, fans really went all out to show their support of their team. Ultimately though all the excitement was not enough for the team to be victorious, as they lost to the Anaheim Ducks in six games.
After the team reached the Stanley Cup Finals, they began a period of decline, where performance was at an all time low. In 2011 the Senators began to rebuild their team-starting with their goaltending. In a trade with the Colorado Avalanche the Senators acquired star goal tender Craig Anderson. In 2012 the team qualified for the playoffs for the first time since their 2007 Finals appearance, only to be eliminated by the New York Rangers in seven games. During this time star Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson began to rise in the ranks, leading the team throughout several playoff runs. Perhaps their most successful run to date came in the 2016-2017 season when they made it to the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ultimately the Senators lost the series in double overtime during game seven, but it was undoubtedly one of the closest match ups to date. Following their upset in the 2017 playoffs, the Senators have lost several of their star players-trading out to get draft picks as an attempt to rebuild the team. With new faces stepping onto the ice this season, fans of the Ottawa Senators are eager to see what they can accomplish this season!
Ottawa Senators vs Toronto Maple Leafs
What has become known as the “Battle of Ontario”, the rivalry between the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs dates to the Senators entrance into the Atlantic Division. With the two playing within the same division, and in such proximity to each other it was only natural that a rivalry began to form. While the two face off regularly throughout the season- they have only played each other four times in the post season, with Toronto coming out victorious all four times. A Senators vs Maple Leafs game is sure to be an experience that you will never forget!
Ottawa Senators vs Montreal Canadiens
The rivalry between the Ottawa Senators and the Montreal Canadiens actually dates to the early 1900’s, when the original Ottawa Senators would play against the Montreal Canadiens. The two faced off in the early years of the League, even in one of the original Stanley Cup Playoff series! After the Ottawa Senators were dismantled the rivalry naturally disintegrated as well, that is until the 1990’s when Ottawa reinvented their team. The two teams now play less than two hours apart from each other, making it very easy for fans from both cities to attend games!
