Over a century of musical greatness
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra got its start in 1895, founded by Frederic Archer and several musicians from the Boston Symphony Orchestra. A few years later the orchestra came under the musical leadership of Victor Herbert, whose charismatic conducting led the orchestra to Carnegie Hall and the 1901 World's Fair. Over the decades, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra became one of the most esteemed symphonies in the United States. In 1992 the symphony received a Grammy for their collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is also celebrated internationally and had the honor of performing at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II's Silver Jubilee in 2004. In addition to touring the world, the orchestra maintains its musical legacy at home. From Beethoven's classics to movie score concerts, Tchaikovsky's timeless works to holiday pops performances, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has something for all!
