A meteoric rise to fame
Growing up in Orlando, Rob Thomas was drawn to the keyboard and the rock and roll lifestyles of stars like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. His own childhood and teen years were rough, with a tumultuous family life, homelessness, and drug addiction. However, he was still compelled to write and perform music, and in the early 1990s his band Tabitha's Secret was starting to gain traction at local venues. After Tabitha's Secret broke up, Thomas helped found Matchbox Twenty. They released their debut album in 1999, but poor management and low sales meant that they were almost dropped from their label – until their single "Push" caught fire on the radio. Over the next several decades, Rob Thomas led Matchbox Twenty into becoming one of the biggest alternative rock bands on the radio. In 2000 his collaboration with Santana on the single "Smooth" snagged him three Grammy Awards. Thomas released his debut solo album in 2005, branching out more into pop than his work with Matchbox Twenty.
