A Philosopher for a New Era
Sam Harris grew up in Los Angeles , the son of two entertainment professionals. He went to Stanford University to study English, but after a night under the influence of ecstasy his interest in philosophy deepened. He traveled to India and Nepal to learn about meditation. When he returned to the States he started pursuing degrees in philosophy and neuroscience. Harris was fascinated by the interplay between belief, doubt, and science. In 2004 he released his first book, The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason, an emotional and intellectual reaction to the September 11 terrorist attacks. The book examines and picks apart the entire spectrum of religious beliefs. Since then he has written half a dozen more books on the topic of religion. He has written for the Washington Post, The New York Times, and several other respected publications. In 2013 he launched the Waking Up podcast, where he dissects thoughts and opinions, especially from his critics, and invites guests into conversation.
