Pioneering the new St. Louis scene
Christopher Smith, Jr., was born with music in his blood. His grandfather performed with Muddy Waters and his father played keys. Christopher started playing the drums as a kid, eventually picking up rapping. He left St. Louis for Chicago, encouraged by a cousin who was also a singer. In 2012 Christopher picked up the moniker C. Smi and teamed up with a friend as the rap duo Young Dumb and Outta Control. While they drummed up some local support, they couldn't get any national traction. Smino struck out on his own, releasing S!Ck S!Ck S!CK in 2015. He joined the musical collective Zero Fatigue with Monte Booker and was featured by artists like Noname. In 2017 he unleashed his debut album, blkswn, with contributions from Ravyn Lenae, Bari, Drea Smith, theMIND, and more. The album is a celebration of his home city, a foreshadowing of how Smino plans to bring in the new golden era of St. Louis rap.
