Cup Collecting Champions
Kansas City is a charter member of Major League Soccer, originally founded by sports legend Lamar Hunt as the Kansas City Wiz. They won their first game against the Colorado Rapids and competed in the inaugural MLS Playoffs. In 1997 the team won the conference regular season championship, and midfielder Preki was awarded the MLS MVP title. Under the leadership of Bob Gansler, Kansas City had a breakout season in 2000. With superstar players like goalkeeper Tony Meola and defender Peter Vermes, the team won both the MLS Supporters' Shield and the MLS Cup Championship. Despite winning their first U.S. Open Cup in 2004, the rest of the early 2000s were hit and miss for Kansas City. But when the team was rebranded as Sporting Kansas City in 2010 and moved to what is now called Children's Mercy Park, things began to turn around. Sporting Kansas City snagged three U.S. Open Cups in 2012, 2015, and 2017 and a second MLS Cup in 2013.
