About The Weeknd
Early Life and Career
Born on February 16,1990 in Scarborough, Ontario, under the name Abel Tesfaye, Canadian R&B artist The Weeknd had a passion for music throughout his youth. His taste was eclectic, and he enjoyed everything from indie rock to post punk to hip hop and soul. Desperate to pursue a career in music, he dropped out of high school at the age of 17, just a year shy of graduation. He recounts that he left home one weekend and decided not to return, and the incident subsequently became the inspiration for his stage name.
Although seemingly a risky move, dropping out of high school paid off for Tesfaye. He promoted himself throughout Toronto, touring several venues and posting his music online through a variety of platforms such as Twitter, YouTube and Soundcloud. His large online presence helped Tesfaye build a solid fan-base, which set him up for success. He first garnered critical attention after the release of his mixtapeThe House of Balloons back in 2011. Following quickly on the heels of that success, he released two more street albums,Thursday andEchoes for Silence - both of which were free of charge. The non-commercial nature of Tesfaye's music and the lack of information surrounding his life led to the development of a mysterious reputation: The Weeknd remained in the shadows, despite an exploding fan base keen to get their hands on cheap tickets to his shows.
Rise to Fame
Tesfaye was propelled forward into the mainstream spotlight after playing the Coachella music festival in 2012 and his first commercially viable album was released in 2013. The album, titledKiss Land, featured the artist Drake and received widespread praise from critics. Three notable singles from the album were released - "Live For," "Belong to the World" and the title track of the album itself. His collaboration with Drake marked the pinnacle of a long-term friendship, with Drake having previously mentored his fellow Canadian in the ways of the music business. Building off the success of "Kiss Land," Tesfaye collaborated with Ariana Grande on the popular single "Love Me Harder," which came in at No.7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also worked on the album for the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie, producing a song called "Earned It."
His second studio album, titledBeauty Behind the Madness, was released in the summer of 2015, and fans became even more eager to get their hands on cheap The Weeknd tickets. This was especially true after the release of the popular singles "The Hills," and "Can't Feel My Face," the latter of which proved to be his most popular single release thus far, coming in at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.Tesfaye has enjoyed a phenomenal amount of success in recent years and each year coming will likely be no exception.
