West Virginia University's football program didn't have the most auspicious start, when they lost 72-0 in their very first game in 1891. However, the Mountaineers quickly climbed to a place of respect, making their first bowl appearance in 1922. In the 1950s, under Coach Art "Pappy" Lewis, the team became a conference powerhouse. Throughout the following decades, the program experienced many highs and lows. However, a new era started with the hiring of Coach Rich Rodriguez. He brought the Mountaineers to the Backyard Brawl, where a victory would give them a shot at the National Championship Game. However, they fell to the Pittsburgh Panthers, and Rodriguez left the program to coach the Michigan Wolverines. The Mountaineers soldiered on to snag a win at the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. Dana Holgorsen took the helm in 2011 and immediately led the Mountaineers to the Orange Bowl, where they destroyed Clemson 70-33.
